OK, you shop-happy screwballs! :D We know that you've been walking through the stores and looking through your boxes of parts and saying to yourself..

"You know, I could build a wicked custom blaster out of that"

Well, do we have the answer for that...

The Blaster Builders Club Public Forums and The Kapowwe Company are pleased to announce the
BBC/KAPOWWE 3rd ANNUAL CUSTOM BLASTER CONTEST!!

The last 2 year's contests have been a smashing success and if the builds that have graced the board over this last year are any indication, this years contest will be the best so far!

If you entered last year, the rules are pretty much the same, but even so, it's a good idea to scope them out again, just to be safe. It'd be a right shame to get disqualified because of a technicality, so please read through them carefully, and good luck to all entrants!

PRIZES:

Ok, the goodies first. :)

Rather than outlining specific prizes for 1st place, 2nd place, etc, we're going to go with the Blanket Shoot layout. What that means is that the 1st place winner will get their choice of the prizes, then the 2nd place winner will get to choose from the remainder, then 3rd and so on until the prizes are gone. In no particular order..

$75 Gift Certificate from The Kapowwe Company

$30 Gift Certificate from The Kapowwe Company

$50 Gift Certificate from Blastech.com

Buffalo rotary tool kit with Flex Shaft attachment (110/120 volt)

Dremel Sanding/ Grinding kit

Airsoft Broomhandle Mauser with long and short clips

Badger 155-7 Anthem Double Action Airbrush Kit

A big thanks goes out to Kapowwe, John Shields at Blast-Tech, and everyone that donated prizes to the "blanket"

While it's never been so much about the prizes, as the joy of the build, it's great to have a nice selection of goodies to choose from.

And now for the...

RULES:
The entry has to be made using a toy gun as the base piece; however, this toy can't be a replica of an existing sci-fi prop design, such as the Battle Droid Blaster, a Star Trek Phaser, etc. Other than that, anything is allowed, as long as it's a "toy"--cap guns, water guns, Airsofts, etc.

The finished blaster also has to be a custom design, not a replica of a movie weapon. For example, an entry using a Broomhandle Mauser as the base piece is acceptable, provided it isn't converted into a DL-44/Merr Sonn type of blaster.

Finished entries need to be original, un-posted works.

Entries must be kept anonymous; posting which entry is yours--at the BBC, or any other forum board--will get you disqualified. Once the contest is over and winners are announced, you are free (and encouraged) to post as many pics as you want (wherever you want). A separate thread will be set up for questions, comments and discussion.

The competition will be open to BBC members only (including Staff). The BBC Administrators will know which entry belongs to who, and therefore will not vote or enter.

The contest will run from June 1, 2006 through September 3, 2006; this schedule is for the actual building, and entries must be submitted within this time frame. We will take as much time as needed to post and judge the entries, and then the winners will be announced.

Finally, the most important rule to remember is to HAVE FUN! :D

HOW TO ENTER:
There is no entry fee; each member may submit up to two (2) entries, with only three (3) pics per entry, please. The competition staff has the freedom to clean up and/or resize the pictures as necessary.

A general parts list needs to be included with each entry, however a full tutorial on how to build the blaster is NOT necessary.

As part of the entry requirement, one (1) pic MUST be of the original (unmodified) toy gun as a comparison to the finished blaster. We would also request that "detail" shots be kept to an absolute minimum so that the pics aren't overloaded with multiple/layered images. Please do not add in Photoshopped special effects!

You must also include our contest's name "2006 BBC/Kapowwe Custom Blaster Contest" in at least one pic of the entry submission photos---we'd prefer it in the "before" photo, but that's not set in stone . For example, get a 3 X 5 index card, write "2006 BBC/Kapowwe Custom Blaster Contest" on it, put it next to your creation, and then take a picture of both. The contest name CANNOT be digitally added on the image after the picture is taken, it must be in the photograph.

Entries are accepted via email ONLY; send to * with "BBC CONTEST ENTRY" in the subject line. Each entry should include the following: full name, mailing and email addresses, user/board name, a parts list, and entry pics in JPG format. All information will be kept confidential.

JUDGING/VOTING:
The entries will be judged by the entire BBC membership; all members are encouraged to vote for one (1) entry, whether they enter the contest or not.

As part of the entry requirement, all entrants must vote. (And no, you can't vote for your own entry/entries; if someone does, they will be disqualified!)

Voting will not start until after the entry deadline has past, and all entries are posted.

Voting will be done using the BBC's poll system; this will only allow one vote per account. The top four entries will be judged the winners.

In the event of a tie, a new poll will be set up between those entries.

If a member has 2 winning entries, only the highest "Place" prize will be awarded.

We usually use a couple of the pics of the winning blasters for the banners for the next year's contest. So, we'll go with the typical " all submitted photos become the property of the Blaster Builders Club", but if you would prefer that they weren't used, just let me know. ;)

That pretty much wraps it up. So get out there, get to looking at those guns and let's see what everyone comes up with!

Year of the airsoft? :lol Are the rules the same as last year. I want to be shure.

ToothTech wrote:
Same rules this year, more or less--it it ain't broke, don't fix it :D

The only change is in the awarding of prizes--the First place winner will get to pick any of the prizes, Second gets to pick from what's left, and so on.

In the Black Powder shooting community, this is what's know as a "blanket shoot"--as an entry fee, each shoort has to donate a prize of a certain value, these are placed on a blanket and the winner gets first pick, and so on down the line. We're not doing the entry fee part ;)

Z-Man12 (-)I love JK(-) wrote:
Ok got that.

I'm new to this site, and I was wondering if I understand to rules correctly. We can only submit up to 2 entries built between June 1 and Sept. 3rd yes? So nothing Ive built befor those date is eligable? Just making sure.

ToothTech wrote:
Yes and no----generally, as long as the blaster has NOT been posted on another board, you should be good to go. So if you built something 2 years ago and never "showed it off" on a forum board, no problem.

However....

One of the entry requirements is that you have to have a sign in the pic with the contest name on it (BBC/Kapowwe Blaster Contest or approximate variant ;) ), and you also have to have a "before" image of the unmodified toy gun you're using to build the entry(s).

Getting the pic with the sign should be easy enough (and it has to physically in the pic, not PhotoShopped in). The sign can be in any of the pics.

Suppose you built it using a green water gun. You need to have a "before" pic of it to enter, so it's not an issue if the before image is of a purple water gun, as long as it's the same "model" of water gun!

Apelord wrote:
Groovy.

I have already canbalized my cool blaster for parts. There's enough parts to do 2 blasters, added to the new base guns. I don't normally build these very often, but I'm having fun, and it's nice break from my day job. And to tell the truth I really want that Mauser :D

well if this isnt a fine idea, I may have to give this a 3rd try. I have all my parts, just need to send a photo then build the blasted thing. hope it looks as good in real life as I got it on paper.

Lawgiver wrote:
Has any thought been given to not showing the parts list until after the build?

I find it somewhat skews my opinion of the finished work. Seeing some entries use toilet paper holders and paper clips and others use custom, hand made, or high dollar parts. It kind of affects my opinion of the overall gun, especially if you notice the individual pieces after seeing the list.

Maybe I’m alone here but the parts used weigh in to my final opinion of the gun much like hero or replica prop guns. I’ll try and avert my eyes and not dig into the parts list and judge the build on its final look/improvement/mod and not the pieces used…

Z-Man12 (-)I love JK(-) wrote:
Wow that is rather harsh Lawgiver the point of props is to be inexpensive and to use what you wan't to get the look you want. You could spend $200+ and the gun would still look like crap if you can't build. If you can build then you could use Toilet paper (skip the holders) and it will still look good. :D

Ok I missed the official prop ruling that said the point of props was to be inexpensive and use what you want. Or did you mean the point of the contest... Either way I admire a well built, engineered, and designed prop and if I can see/identify the flaws or cheap doodads thrown on then it distracts me from seeing the intended overall picture. I’m sure there are persons on this very board or others that can build a fantastic prop gun from bubblegum, pipe cleaners, and q-tips. All I’m saying is can we wait for the parts list until after the conclusion of the judging.

Not harsh, honest… I will more likely value/appreciate a prop more that appears custom and has no recognizable greeblies. It’s like watching a movie and “seeing” the CGI, suddenly you’re out of the movie and back in the theater, I want to look at a blaster and see a blaster not a watergun with macaroni glued on.

LG

Z-Man12 (-)I love JK(-) wrote:
Fair enough. the reason I said enexpensive is take the E-11 for example the originals cost I am guessing $30 to make and they used windshield wipers. I am more impressed with clever usage of cheep things then cumstom millied parts. I vote on final apperence not what it parts look like, or even the base gun. Take last years winner by Fried Mon it was the uglest base I have ever seen but with some salvaged scrapps look at what it became.

Chapter Master Tu'Shan wrote:
It doesn't matter what you use. Your skill level remains the same, so if you are more skilled, you can use cheap stuff and make it look good. If you are afraid of being influenced, don't look at the entries.

Hey everyone! I was just wondering what methods of blaster building are more succesful for you.

Ex 1. Taking a toy gun and just building on it with no ideas or plans in mind and just seeing how it turns out.

Ex 2. making a plan/drawings of what you want it to look like and going out and looking for pieces that look the ones in your drawings.

Which usually works best?

Darth Lars wrote:
I would say a little bit of both. You have a vision. Then you adapt that vision to the toy gun and the parts you get.

You know, I think there is a valid point here.

I have to agree that it might be distracting to have the materials listed on the front end. I've modified the entry posts accordingly. I'm figuring that as the 2 that have been posted so far weren't made of macaroni and toilet paper rolls (I'd love to see that build! 8) ), it should have no ill affect.

When I was putting the entry posts together, I couldn't remember whether we did that previous years or not. I'm getting old and the memory is shot. :D But now that it's been brought up I'm really thinking we didn't.

I'm contacting both posted entrants to make sure that they are OK with that, since their's are the ones that are impacted, but I've changed them for the interim.

Well we are judging the blasters and not the individual parts used how is that narrow minded? We’re made to wait for tutorials why not the parts list.

I'm fine with the listing of parts, in fact when I see one made from stuff you swear couldnt be made into anything, I tend to bump it up in standing.

silk purse from a sows ear sort of thing :lol
to me it shows even more talent than if you made it up from a bunch of custom machined bits.

but I could see the flip side of it, destroys the illusion of the construction.

I'm with Z-man on the construction, keep slapping stuff apart and together until it looks like a blaster. a couple of times I got the idea for a gun from one particular piece or another and ended up not using that particular part on the finished gun :lol don't be affraid to change your mind or start over......nothing is written in stone!

when making up a gun, I just worry about shape as it applies to function (even if it's just made up function) when you add something to the gun, ask yourself what that part does. just because it might look funky doesn't mean it looks bad.

plus paint makes it all look way different.

sometimes it helps to primer all the bits you are using and adding together to make a blaster. that way the color (or lack of it) won't distract you. you just scrape it off the spots you glue together.

sometimes its better to paint the part separately just so they look more realistic. just because a gun is all black, doesn't mean it should be all the exact same black.

sometimes the hardest part in building a custom is having confidence on your choice of parts. once you get a couple done, you begin to trust your own judgement and it all gets easier to do.

well said ! that`s the way I built my last blasters as well.
Had no plan (and no idea to be honest), just put pieces together til it looks cool, logical and functionable.

maybe eventually I want to see about a foregrip to cock the gun with, to improve the rate of fire.

wonder if the gearbox from a cheapy airsoft could be rigged to cock the gun after each shot.....

anyway, I got three other projects for the contest chugging right along, so its just fine the way it is!

what was it I was gonna say? OH yeah!

BUILD SOMETHING!!!!!!

so what if it sucks, we all make mistakes! it's a learning process!

build something!!! we can all laugh together! it's not like this is one of those anal fan boy sights where prop nazis try to make you feel like dirt because you used the wrong sized hex head bolt or something.

screw those guys, we're having fun and they can't ruin it!

every single entry in the older contests had something novel about them that makes you sit back and think.....we all inspire each other to try harder and to keep on truckin'.

we need your entries to inspire the rest of us next year!

when I say inspire, I mean to steal ideas from. :D

I'm NOT entering it, just going to paint it the way its built.

got three other ones in the works, those I'm keeping mum about.

I'm just saying the nerf guns look so good right out of the box, its hard to find a way to modify them without just uglying them up.

BTW when I vote, I take into account how butt ugly the base gun is.

anyone who can take a turd and polish it all up and make it look good gets my vote every time!

maybe we should also have a painting contest, just painting without modding the guns.

I've seen quite a few squirt guns that look pretty good just the way they are!!
and the nerfs rock right out of the box too.

I agree there, I got the 4 guns that make up the one big gun, and it was all I could do to even think about using the one as I did for a base last years contest. I hope they keep'em coming, they've really had some cool designs here of late.

Lesson learned today: You can not bake sculpey onto a plastic toy gun. Even the lowest temperature that sculpey can cure at, will warp the plastic.:rolleyes

I thought that because both the gun and Sculpey are made of PVC, that it would have survived, but apparently not.
It has not only melted, the gun has shrunk in size! I can not get my finger through the trigger guard even with the trigger pulled back.

I have had this gun since I was a kid, so I didn't see much hope in finding a replacement now. Unusual thing about the "donor gun" is that the grip was left-handed!
I had been planning on a Blade Runner/BSG new series/Fifth Element/Ghost in the Shell-inspired blaster. Now, all that inspiration is wasted. I think it would have been sweet. :cry

I have never had good luck baking sculpey. That is why I'm glad I learned a new method during my action figure customizing days. I boil it. It has never harmed the item I'm sculpting onto the way baking has more than once. You don't even need a full boil. You can take it off the heat once you submerge the item. Just allow it to sit for a minute or so. When you first pull it out, it will be a bit rubbery but as it cools, it will firm up well.

Once Chris has the last of the entries posted, we'll get a special thread started where you can vote on the entries. Due to the way the software is set up, you can only vote for ONE entry. If you have an entry in the contest, you are obligated to vote (but you can't vote for your own entry).

Good luck to all of the entrants, you guys did some great work there!

I'm really looking forward to the post-vote discussions about these. There are a ton of things I've got questions about cuz I know that a couple pics doesn't always get the full effect of a build across.

As Brian said, we'll put together the voting thread and make sure that everyone gets the votes in.

Best of luck to everyone and WELL DONE!

Well, I am very proud to get the second place with my heavy metal Gatlin gun, specially cus it isn`t finished yet :lol

Actually I want to use a crank on the left side to rotate the barrels. On the barrel rod inside is a "plate gear" of an old handdrill - on the end of the crank axis is a "cone gear", so you can turn the barrels with it.

Will post some images later.....

My inspiration were the various rifles on Tatooine and Kyle Katarns bryar pistol.

The barrel ribs is from a vacuum cleaner hose, pressed down in an oven between two metal plates so it is flat, and then glued on - ribs lengthwise. The other dark parts of the barrel are pieces of thin steel pipes that have been cold-blued.
After gluing, filling and priming the grip, I painted a fake wood grain. I used a variation of two tutorials that were posted here, but using only paints that I already had. Mostly rubbing in dark brown and skin-tone acrylics. I had moved the coarse sandpaper in swirls on the butt.
The mag are two pieces of sheet metal stacked and glued onto the magwell, which is some plastic packaging of some sorts.
The energy cylinders were scratch built out of nylon spacers, aluminum sheet and pen parts.
The details on the right side were made just at the last minute...
I had made a scope and a scope mount, but it dawned on me that the scope looked just like a Maglite, so I scrapped it. :)
