It's that time of year again; school's out, and summer will soon be hitting with a vengance! Time to hole up in the workshop with the AC cranked to "ARCTIC", tune in your favorite radio station, and start building.....

The Blaster Builders Club Public Forums and The Kapowwe Company are pleased to announce the BBC/KAPOWWE 2nd ANNUAL CUSTOM BLASTER CONTEST, and version 2.0 has some hefty upgrades---thanks to Kapowwe and a couple of additional sponsors, this year we've been able to more than double the prize amounts!

We've altered the rules a bit this time, so please read through them carefully, and good luck to all entrants! :)

RULES:
The entry has to be made using a toy gun as the base piece; however, this toy can't be a replica of an existing sci-fi prop design, such as the Battle Droid Blaster, a Star Trek Phaser, etc. Other than that, anything is allowed, as long as it's a "toy"--cap guns, water guns, Airsofts, etc.

The finished blaster also has to be a custom design, not a replica of a movie weapon. For example, an entry using a Broomhandle Mauser as the base piece is acceptable, provided it isn't converted into a DL-44/Merr Sonn type of blaster.

Finished entries need to be original, un-posted works.

Entries must be kept anonymous; posting which entry is yours--at the BBC, or any other forum board--will get you disqualified. Once the contest is over and winners are announced, you are free to post as many pics as you want (wherever you want). A separate thread will be set up for questions, comments and discussion.

The competition will be open to BBC members only (including Staff). The BBC Administrators will know which entry belongs to who, and therefore will not vote or enter.

The contest will run from June 1, 2005 through September 4, 2005; this schedule is for the actual building, and entries must be submitted within this time frame. We will take as much time as needed to post and judge the entries, and then the winners will be announced.

Finally, the most important rule to remember is to HAVE FUN!

HOW TO ENTER:
There is no entry fee; each member may submit up to two (2) entries, with only three (3) pics per entry, please. The competition staff has the freedom to clean up and/or resize the pictures as necessary.

A general parts list needs to be included with each entry, however a full tutorial on how to build the blaster is NOT necessary.

As part of the entry requirement, one (1) pic MUST be of the original (unmodified) toy gun as a comparison to the finished blaster. We would also request that "detail" shots be kept to an absolute minimum so that the pics aren't overloaded with multiple/layered images. Please do not add in PhotoShopped special effects!

You must also include our contest's name "BBC/Kapowwe Custom Blaster Contest" in at least one pic of the entry submission photos---we'd prefer it in the "before" photo, but that's not set in stone ;). For example, get a 3 X 5 index card, write "BBC/Kapowwe Custom Blaster Contest" on it, put it next to your creation, and then take a picture of both. The contest name CANNOT be digitally added on the image after the picture is taken, it must be in the photograph.

Entries are accepted via email ONLY; send to * with "BBC CONTEST ENTRY" in the subject line. Each entry should include the following: full name, mailing and email addresses, user/board name, a parts list, and entry pics in JPG format. All information will be kept confidential.

JUDGING/VOTING:
The entries will be judged by the entire BBC membership; all members are encouraged to vote for one (1) entry, whether they enter the contest or not.

As part of the entry requirement, all entrants must vote. (And no, you can't vote for your own entry/entries; if someone does, they will be disqualified!)

Voting will not start until after the entry deadline has past, and all entries are posted.

Voting will be done using the BBC's poll system; this will only allow one vote per account. The top four entries will be judged the winners.

In the event of a tie, a new poll will be set up between those entries.

If a member has 2 winning entries, only the highest "Place" prize will be awarded.

PRIZES:
The Kapowwe Company has donated gift certificates to their site for the contest's prizes. Once the contest is over, information on redeeming these will be sent to the winners.

  • 1st Place - $75 gift certificate
  • 2nd Place - $50 gift certificate
  • 3rd Place - $30 gift certificate
  • 4th Place - $20 gift certificate

A special thank you to Kapowwe, and our other sponsors for donating the prize certificates.

Well, it looks like we'll have to have TWO tie-breakers to determine all four "place" entries!

Entries #7 and #15 are tied for FIRST Place with 9 votes each--the new poll will determine the FIRST and SECOND places.

Entries #2 and #11 are tied for SECOND place with 7 votes each--the new poll will detemine the THIRD and FOURTH places.

The voting threads for these tie-breaking rounds will only last a week (Tuesday, Sep 20 through Tues, Sep 27). After that, the winners will be announced and the entrants names will be posted.

We're still under the CONTEST RULES so please do not post which entry is yours (yet); all members are welcome to vote in this round.

The exception to this are the 4 entrants who are squaring off--the rules state that you can't vote for your own entry. It's not really fair to force them to vote for a directly opposing entry, so they do not have to participate in this round unless they want to.

ToothTech wrote:
And the results are final....finally! :lol

Congrats to the four winners and kudos to all who entered. This year's contest produced some of the best blasters I've ever seen!

Here are the winners of this year's contest:

Entry #7 - FIRST PLACE
built by Pulseriflefan
tied #15 with 9 votes; 26 votes from tie-breaker poll

Entry #15 - SECOND PLACE
built by gunnerk19
tied #7 with 9 votes; 22 votes from tie-breaker poll

Entry #11 - THIRD PLACE
built by tommin
tied #2 with 7 votes; 22 votes from tie-breaker poll

Entry #2 - FOURTH PLACE
built by TK513
tied #11 with 7 votes; 20 votes from tie-breaker poll

Just a note....Kapowwe is in Houston, so I'm not sure when I'll be able to contact them. Our thoughts are with them and everyone else in the Gulf area.

Good luck to all of the entrants! :)

Remember, all entries must be kept anonymous until after the contest is over and the winners have been announced.

WooHoo !!!! Great news Brian !!!

Erm, when you write "toy guns as base", does that mean that "other" things like "gun-looking-household-items" are not allowed ?

Stephan

I've been waiting for this! :D I'm not missing it this time around. I can't wait to get some pics in.
I'll have 3 pics ready to go for June 1st!!! Then maybe 3 more later in the summer.

ToothTech wrote:
Stephan--yeh, some sort of toy needs to be used as the base. This could be a watergun, cap gun, clicker gun, BB gun/airsoft, etc--toys that look like a gun can also be used. Last year we had an entry that used a toy drill for the base---it looks like a gun, so.... ;)

Things not allowed would be glue guns, hose sprayers, spray paint "handguns" resin casts, etc.

Zman--I'll start accepting entries on June1, and stop taking them Sep 4.

Dan--shoot me an email June 1 :D

Z-Man12 (-)I love JK(-) wrote:
Ok so I can start cutting, despite the fact that it is not June 1? I wan't clarafacation I thought the rules said that you could start June 1. :?

pulseriflefan wrote:
I`m a lil confuzed now :

a toy drill which looks like a gun would be okay but a real drill which looks like a gun not - ummm, right ?

Better to concentrate on general toy guns to avoid any trouble ?

TallDarkandDisfigured wrote:
Guys, it's best to stick to toy guns because the contest is sponsored by The Kapowwe Company. ;) If it was sponsored by a tool company you'd see blasters made from hand tools.

pulseriflefan wrote:
sorry, it was just a question for my understanding.

but wait.....

first price : the brand new XF-41 power drill

second price : the powerful HZ-20 electrical hacksaw

third price : nice Black & Decker sticker for your Chevy

Hmm, sounds not too bad at all.....

ToothTech wrote:
:lol Yeah, the prizes/gift certificates have been upped a little, and there's some sweet stuff at Kapowwe's to use them on ;)

Last year when we were kicking ideas around for a contest, we ran thru having it be total scratchbuilds to blasters built from hardware items....

When I first contacted the folks at Kapowwe asking about gift certificates, they offered to sponsor the contest, so that made settling on "toy guns" as the base piece pretty easy! :lol

The June 1 start date is simply when you can start sending in entries. Since part of the entry requirement is to have a pic with the unaltered base piece with the contest sign in it, I wanted to give everyone a little head start.

If you already have a blaster that fits within the rules---ie, made from a toy, not posted anywhere else, etc---you'll still need to get a pic of an unaltered base piece with the BBC/KAPOWWE CUSTOM BLSTER CONTEST sign actually in the pic, not added in later with PhotoShop!

As long as you can send in a "before" pic (with sign) of a base piece identical to the one the blaster was built from, it's cool... ;)

Ok now I can start cutting it up. :devil

Judging is done by the entrants and the BBC membership--each personn gets 1 vote for the blaster they like the best. The juding criteria is left up to each person that votes---some may vote for what looks coolest, some may vote for the one that looks the most realistic, etc.

From the RULES thread:

Quote:
JUDGING:
The entries will be judged by the entire BBC membership; all members are encouraged to vote for one (1) entry, whether they enter the contest or not.

As part of the entry requirement, all entrants must vote. (And no, you can't vote for your own entry/entries; if someone does, they will be disqualified!)

I was wonderig is the contest open to people outside the USA and can u enter a set of blasters as one enty?

Yes, the contest is open to all participants world wide. Actually, last year's 1st place blaster was built by some clown over in Europe. (just kidding PRfan!!! :D) But yeah, in this arena, all are welcome. Brian, please correct me if I'm wrong about that.

As for a set of blasters, I would say that it might be allowed as one entry as long as the set is two identical weapons. Again, Brian correct me if I'm wrong here but I was picturing a scene from Desperado. :)

edit: typo :?

ToothTech wrote:
The contest is open to anyone as long as they are a BBC member; however, since the prizes are gift certificates to a store selling airsoft and toy guns, you'll need to research laws concerning replica/toy guns for your country.

Haven't thought about a set..have to think about it a bit. ;)

ToothTech wrote:
The staff is cool with a "set", provided they're matching and/or identical blasters--ie, a 2 gun cowboy get up, or right/left hand versions of the same gun.

Although this is a "blaster" contest, must the weapon shoot energy bolts? Would a gun that fires a net or grappling hook be allowed, as long as it follows the rules (non-scifi toy base weapon, completed weapon is not a replica of any real weapon or prop) ?

Lucky. School never ends for me :(

It has to be a sci-fi blaster? Can it be a made up sci-fi blaster?

ToothTech wrote:
Yes--it's a custom blaster contest, so it has to be made up from your imagination, and not a copy of an existing design. Not all sci-fi weapons are laser rayguns, think of the guns used in THE MATRIX or ALIENS, all of which shot bullets (high-tech, but still "slug-throwers" as Mr Garibaldi might say ;) )

The entry can be loosely based on existing weapons (the sotrmtrooper's E11, or the BLADE RUNNER blaster, etc), but in the end, it has to be your own blaster design! :)

You're making me feel old Nerf--I've been out of school since....oh, before you were born.... ;) :lol

Speaking of which, what's the fastest way to seal and smooth out wood? Without a whole lot of fine sanding, that is. :rolleyes

Never done much wood painting, but I think Dupli-Color Filler primer would work OK--it's a thicker primer than the regular stuff, and might fill in the pores better when it gets absorbed by the wood.

I've seen some glues that could be thinned down and used as a wood sealer as well. Worse comes to worse, try brushing on some thin super glue.

automotive spot putty works ok, but you will still end up sanding alot.

sometimes if i suspect the wood is too porous I lay on the spray automotive primer then work it into the wood with my finger or a rag with a bit of thinner on it.

you can do the same thing with the spot putty, it's really just really thick primer in a tube.

either way just make sure its good and dry before trying to file or sand it.

filing works great on big flat areas, btw.

just dont over file, you can always add a little more filler primer!

tommin wrote:
Good advice, fellas. Thanks!!

I've used spot putty before and will be using it in certain places here. I'm more concerned with larger surfaces that have intricate corners and grooves. One idea is to give it a heavy wash of future floor polish. That stuff worked like a charm on sanded clear cast resin. It turned it from hazey to completely smooth and clear. :eek

The only problem with future floor polish is that it is water soluble and I don't know how well it will accept petroleum based paints. Anyone ever tried this?

The Dupli-Color Filler primer may be my best bet.

Z-Man12 (-)I love JK(-) wrote:
I use wood filler some and it is sort of water soluble and never had a problem :) . You could always make a small test pice out of some scratch wood.

That seemed to be the song ringing through my head for much of the build.

I can't wait until voting is over and we can talk about which is whose.

There sure are a lot of great entries up.

I hope we have a rush of last minute entries too.

Voting poll is up, mass email sent! Just a reminder on voting--you only get 1 vote, so make sure you check through all the designs before voting. The poll will be up for 2 weeks; on the 19th, I'll close it and post the winning results.

A big thanks to everyone involved--we've got almost double the entries we had last year! :)

that maverick nerf certainly was a popular base for some of them, if you took out the chamber and replaced it was a flat piece on each side it would be kinda like the judge dredd lawgiver.

2 days left to get your vote in--late tomorrow night I'll lock the thread and start sorting thru the results!

We need a few more votes; It's been tied now for a week...

Yes vote.

ToothTech wrote:

Good luck and thanks to everyone for entering!

thedap wrote:
all the entries were great , it's a shame that some didn't get any votes as they were sooo close to call on.

next year should be da bomb!

everyone should take a bow, you earned it!

and any of you who didn't try your hand at making one and entering.....shame!
you coulda maybe have won hands down, but you'll never know unless you try!

next year, I don't want to hear any excuses like "oh I cut off my fingers in a blender accident" or " I lost my vision to diabetes" or " I can't afford a squirt gun on disability"..............hogwash!

end rant.

Z-Man12 (-)I love JK(-) wrote:
If nothing else you can find a squirt gun in some kids toy box and "borrow" it.

Fried Mon Calamari wrote:
How about "I lost my finger to a diabetic with a squirt gun disability" ?
:D

AS you said, they are all excellent and that's not some grade school comment to make sure that no one feels bad.

The entrees this year were fantastic and I would be happy to have each one in my collection. Serious kudos to everyone!

Now, off to vote again. :x Like I didn't have a hard enough time the first time around! :lol

Thanks to all the builders for making it such a fun and memorable contest.

All the guns rocked. Sorry some people had to go without votes. There wasn't a shabby gun there. :D

Please don't go away. I have lots of questions for all of you.

If you'd like to start your own thread featuring your gun(s) and maybe show some pictures that we didn't see like building progression or beauty shots, please feel free.

Thanks again to all that entered.

oh , and what did you use for the scope rail on your first entry? it kinda looks familiar

Funky squirt gun came from Dollar General, it cost me a whole dollar. I was looking for a base for a BFG and kept being drawn back by it. Loved the desine so got and took it home modified it a bunch and came up with the entry. Total cost with paint $4. It is my favorite balster I have made so far.

The scope rail on the Flash Hammer is a scope rail off a airsoft double egeal. If you rember the one that I poasted a while back that what it came from.

Fried Mon Calamari wrote:
Z- they were both excellent builds man!

Remember that with this type of voting, it's not that ones that didn't get votes wasn't good, just that others caught folks eye a little more. ;)

I really liked the organic feel of your second blaster. and your first blaster looks like something you'd see in Battlestar Galactica or another reality based sci-fi show.

Thanks that makes me feel al lot better. I was going for the relistic on the first and the futursitic on the second glad some one noticed that besides me. :D

Sorry, I've been so scarce as of late. Tryin' to fix that, right now. :D

Again, excellent work to all that have entered the blaster contest this year. Great turn-out. Stiff competition. Cheers and beverages all around. :cheers
